I read "The Heart of India
" by Mark Tully this "winter break". It was a lucidly written book that succeeded in capturing the essence of a time that has *truly* gone by. I would wager to say that with the kind of globalization we have seen in the last decade, the India depicted in the stories no longer exists. Anywhere.
Oh the caste and class lines do -- and probably run stronger and deeper -- it is the innocence and simplicity that has disappeared.
